Proverbs 13:12

New International Version (NIV)

12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

It seems as if right now, more than any other time in history, it is hard to be patient. We live in the time of fast food, high-speed Internet, and social networking sites that give us news about the people we know in real time. We are not used to waiting for things that make us happy; we like getting gratification right away.

But the Bible teaches us that patience is one of the fruits of the spirit; loving Jesus and trying to emulate Him can help us harvest it in ourselves. When we’re used to getting instant feedback on the cute pictures we posted online or being able to pay for next-day shipping on something we want, how are we supposed to patiently wait for the things we desire most?

When we have a vacation or party on the horizon, waiting for that day to arrive can feel unbearable. We count the days until Christmas and other holidays. As a Christian, waiting for our rewards in Heaven can feel that way, too. We don’t want to be bogged down by paying bills, suffering tragedies, and dealing with temptation. We get impatient.

The problem with living like that is that we don’t take the time to appreciate the present. When we truly want something to happen, it can make the rest of our lives until that moment feel like purgatory. Jesus wasn’t in a hurry; he had faith in God’s schedule for His life. He made sure that each day of His earthly life was spent preparing for His eternal life with God.

Part of our faith involves waiting for God to work out His will in our lives. It isn’t always easy, but when we can rest assured that when that day arrives, all the wait will be more than worth it.

Galatians 5

New International Version (NIV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
